Open Graduate (Ph.D.) Position
The Hockett Lab has a Ph.D. position available for a motivated student to apply community sequencing approaches (amplicon sequencing and metagenomics) to understand the role(s) of antagonistic interactions in structuring phyllosphere microbiomes at a fine scale. This research will include a combination of next-generation sequencing, molecular genetics, and fluorescent-assisted cell sorting (FACS).
The goal of this work is to use a multidisciplinary approach to gain insight into how narrow-spectrum protein antibiotics (bacteriocins) influence the leaf microbial community, which has implications for the management of beneficial and plant pathogenic bacteria. This position will be co-advised with Dr. Terrence Bell, Assistant Professor of Phytobiomes, in the Department of Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology.
This position is associated with the recently funded mBiome cohort, a unique training opportunity focused on providing graduate students with broad training in microbiome manipulation. See here for more about the mBiome cohort. The application deadline is December 15, 2017.
Those interested should contact Dr. Hockett directly. Information regarding the Penn State Plant Pathology graduate programs can be found here and here. Information on the dual-title degrees offered in Biogeochemistry and International Agriculture and Development can be found here.
